Disability Awareness & Inclusion Training

An interactive training session which explores the experiences of young people with disabilities/additional needs and autism.

An interactive training session which explores the experiences of young people with disabilities/additional needs and autism, and how best to include, engage with and support them effectively as members and participants of youth groups and organisations.

Target audience:

Staff and volunteers working with young people in youth organisations and/or faith-based groups.

Approach and Content:

Developed from tried-and-tested awareness training for InterAct’s own staff and volunteers, we draw upon 20 years’ experience of running inclusive support and mentoring programmes for young people with disabilities/additional needs, and/or autism.

Where possible, this training will be co-delivered by young people with autism and other disabilities / additional needs: they enrich the training session with individual insights and experiences, positive and negative.

This training is offered as a flexible package, which can include:

  • Types of disabilities, and their causes and impact
  • People not labels
  • Appropriate language and terminology
  • Understanding and breaking  down the barriers - Medical and Social Models of Disability
  • Understanding autism and Asperger’s Syndrome, including:
    • Myths and stereotypes
    • Positive attributes & contributions of people with autism
  • Hidden difficulties
  • Equality & Diversity in practice - Making inclusion happen
  • Inclusion & belonging
  • Getting to know young people, and supporting their aspirations
  • Effective support & inclusion
  • Tips for effective communication
  • Faith perspectives [optional content - for churches/Christian-based organisations]
