(Social Enterprise - a strategy for success, Department of Trade and Industry, 2004)
“Social enterprises are businesses with primarily social objectives whose surpluses are principally reinvested for that purpose in the business or in the community, rather than being driven by the need to maximise profit for shareholders and owners
Social enterprises tackle a wide range of social and environmental issues and operate in all parts of the economy. By using business solutions to achieve public good, the Government believes that social enterprises have a distinct and valuable role to play in helping create a strong, sustainable and socially inclusive economy ( www.dti.gov.uk ) .

A Social Firm is one type of social enterprise and is a business set up specifically to create employment for disabled people. See www.socialfirms.co.uk InterAct supports and enables disadvantaged people to return to work. What better way to make this happen than through the development of social enterprise - sustainable, competitive businesses with a financial and social remit, providing paid employment at market rates and providing training and work experience opportunities to disadvantaged groups - giving them a stepping stone to move on into open employment. |
